AAS publishes articles within the following categories as they apply to beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, poultry, companion animals, swine, and other species that benefit mankind with meat and milk, work (e.g., draught), recreation, ecosystem services, fuel, and material byproducts (e.g., hides, feathers, and feed byproducts). Authors will select one of the following topic areas when submitting a manuscript for peer review:
Production and Management encompasses research related to the management and production of various livestock and poultry species, including but not limited to growth and efficiency, health, reproduction, and maternal/paternal and offspring performance.
Nutrition includes studies on the dietary needs of domestic animals, including the impact of different nutrients and energy, feed ingredients and additives on animal performance, health, and nutrient utilization.
Forages and Feeds focuses on research related to the selection, production, management, and utilization of forages and other feed sources, including the impact of different feed sources on animal performance and health.
Genetics and Breeding is comprised of applied studies on animal genetics and breeding, including the development of genomic selection tools and identification of genetic markers for economically important traits.
Health includes research and findings on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of various diseases, disorders, and health conditions.
Physiology involves studies on the structure and function underlying animal growth and development, metabolism, immunology, and reproduction.
Sustainability and Integrated Systems focuses on research related to the sustainable management of animal production systems, including holistic integrated strategies to reduce environmental impacts and enhance animal welfare.
Welfare and Behavior includes studies on the behavior and well-being of livestock, including the impact of management practices, systems, and housing on animal welfare and behavior.
Extension and Teaching encompasses research related to the development and implementation of educational programs and outreach initiatives aimed at improving animal production and management practices.
Food Science includes research on the production, processing, quality, and safety of animal-derived food products, including meat, milk, and eggs.
