Pacific Northwest Chapter
Bill Sanchez, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAN
The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists meets annually in October at the Pacific Northwest Animal Nutrition Conference.
The location of the 2010 meeting was in Vancouver, B.C. In addition to our annual business meeting, this past year we had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Marina Vonkyserlingk, Professor at UBC, speak about their program and facilities. Marina is a very active member of the PNW Conference each year bringing several students to the Poster Competition. She has an internationally recognized program in Animal Welfare and is doing cutting edge work in Dairy Cattle management, facilities and cow comfort.
The PNW ARP AS Officers under the leadership of Chapter President, Joe Harrison, revived the annual scholarship program. We selected Savana Frischman from Oregon State University, an Animal Science major specializing in Beef and Dairy Production, as the recipient of this year's award.
Our chapter lists 72 members in the National Directory from the states of WA, OR, and ID. Attendance at the PNW meeting usually averages about 20 members. At the meeting, Joe Harrison was elected President and Tom Ritter agreed to serve as a Director at Large, joining current Directors Mike Mehren and Steve Jones. Carl Hunt will continue to serve as Treasurer and Bill Sanchez as Secretary. Next year’s meeting will be held in Portland, OR and the Chapter meeting has been moved to Wednesday morning, October 5, at 6 am at the Portland Airport Embassy Suites.
