Journal Usage/Downloads
We are very pleased to report that, partly as a result of some recent Elsevier marketing campaigns to promote The Professional Animal Scientist (PAS; more information below), we have seen an increase in the number of article downloads in 2017.
HealthAdvance Usage
PAS has seen an increase in usage on the HealthAdvance site (www.professionalanimalscientist.org) in the first half of 2017, compared with 2016. In 2016 the average number of monthly downloads was 989. For 2017 the average monthly downloads has increased to 1,392.
Please note that the backfiles of the journal were made promotionally available during January to April 2016, while the journal’s member subscribers were transferred to Elsevier, so in those months we experienced a higher number of downloads than usual.

ScienceDirect Usage:
ScienceDirect is where institutional subscribers access the journal. As you can see below, the usage for January, February, and March of 2016 was higher than usual as we made the journal freely accessible during the first quarter of the year to ensure a smooth migration to Elsevier’s platforms for institutional users.
We have seen an increase in usage in February 2017, compared with previous months, with 1,170 individual downloads in that month. We hope to see this trend continue throughout March and April, once the ScienceDirect usage numbers for those months are available.
The number of individual, full-text article downloads for PAS articles on ScienceDirect in 2016–2017 (up until the end of February 2017) are as follows:

Marketing and Promotional Activities
1.) Most-downloaded articles campaign
In March/April 2017 the marketing team at Elsevier arranged a campaign to promote the top five most-downloaded articles from PAS. These articles were highlighted in an email campaign (which was sent to authors that have recently published in PAS and in other relevant animal science journals published by Elsevier).
The articles were also highlighted in banner advertisements on the animal science journal home pages and in social media (on the ElsevierVetNews Twitter and Facebook accounts). Some screenshots of the campaign are included below.

2.) Elsevier news article about Temple Grandin
April is National Autism Awareness Month, and in support of this the editor-in-chief of Elsevier’s daily blog (ElsevierConnect) interviewed world-renowned animal scientist Temple Grandin.
The news story is highlighted on the front page of Elsevier’s main website, and the full news story is available here: https://www.elsevier.com/connect/temple-grandin-on-the-kinds-of-minds-science-desperately-needs.
In the news story we linked to articles previously published by Temple Grandin in the various animal science journals which we publish, this included a recently-published article in PAS (see screenshot to the right).
